Architectural vision

Fraport is the fourth largest airport in Europe, transporting 64.5 million passengers annually with more than 2,000 advertising screens inside and outside of the two terminals.

The outer area at Terminal 1 was completely renovated with advertising media to be integrated in a way that increased the formal and aesthetic value of the architecture.

We developed an adaptive real-time media data feed for the lighting to form a harmonic impression with the advertisment.

The look of the LED band corresponds to the color themes of the advertisements and their play patterns are generated in an artistic-abstracted manner. The result blends into the architectural vision of the entire renovation from both an aesthetic and functional perspective.

The overall planning of media technology was handled by medienprojekt p2 GmbH. Under their leadership S[quadrat] GmbH installed the LED technology for the 435 m long light band running along the entire front of the building.

Our intelligent color algorithm analyzes the main color schemes of the media content running in real time, extracting a corresponding color palette.

Our intelligent color algorithm analyzes the main color schemes of the media content running in real time, extracting a corresponding color palette.

Color schemes with too high or too low luminance or saturation are automatically optimized by the color algorithm or excluded if too extreme.

Various patterns are generated from the extracted color schemes and fed to the LED band to form a continuous animation matching the colors of the ad. When switching between advertisements, slow animations stretching over the entire length of the light band provide a subtle and intriguing transition.

In order to communicate the overall impression of our imaging process, we simulated the real media feed as pre-visualization with the real architectural geometry. Typical perspectives and paths of passengers and vehicles could thus be evaluated in a realistic manner.

Professional IT integration

As is typical for us, we handed over the LED installation as a turnkey solution to the client and operator Fraport. The system is designed for uninterrupted, long-term operation.

After our partners had put the hardware into operation, we integrated the software of the entire system into the IT infrastructure of the airport network. Aspects of IT security like configuration of the firewall were ensured by us in close cooperation with the airport’s internal IT department.

The LED components for advertising and light strips come from different manufacturers. A 125-point color calibration balances out chromatic deviations caused by technical differences.

Maintenance services for the media data feed and display can be provided with the help of a central device either on-site or via remote access. The maintenance device can follow the current advertising content and the corresponding color feed of the LED band.

The technical maintenance was designed to be as convenient as possible, so we developed a server-based monitoring system to monitor all components.

The monitoring system logs not only the general availability of the system but also individual component data like computational load, temperature, or image repetition frequency, in real-time.

The intelligent early warning system automatically informs the service technician via e-mail if any failure is looming. This way, breakdowns of the LED system are minimized.
