The outdoor arrival area of the Frankfurt airport, Fraport, was comprehensively redesigned in 2015 by netzwerkarchitekten and we were brought in as media partners. We designed and implemented the data feed for the illumination of a 435 m long light band running along the terminal facade. With the help of an intelligent color algorithm, the light band adapts in real time to the colors of the advertising campaigns running across the street on a large screen. The newly designed visitor guidance and all media spaces are thus united in an aesthetically holistic concept, creating a unified experience.
Architectural vision
Light and advertising spaces in harmony with the use of space
Media feed with chameleon effect
Smart color algorithm in real time and pre-visualization in 3D
Our intelligent color algorithm analyzes the main color schemes of the media content running in real time, extracting a corresponding color palette.
Color schemes with too high or too low luminance or saturation are automatically optimized by the color algorithm or excluded if too extreme.
Various patterns are generated from the extracted color schemes and fed to the LED band to form a continuous animation matching the colors of the ad. When switching between advertisements, slow animations stretching over the entire length of the light band provide a subtle and intriguing transition.
Professional IT integration
Long-term maintenance with hardware monitoring system
As is typical for us, we handed over the LED installation as a turnkey solution to the client and operator Fraport. The system is designed for uninterrupted, long-term operation.
After our partners had put the hardware into operation, we integrated the software of the entire system into the IT infrastructure of the airport network. Aspects of IT security like configuration of the firewall were ensured by us in close cooperation with the airport’s internal IT department.
The LED components for advertising and light strips come from different manufacturers. A 125-point color calibration balances out chromatic deviations caused by technical differences.
The monitoring system logs not only the general availability of the system but also individual component data like computational load, temperature, or image repetition frequency, in real-time.
The intelligent early warning system automatically informs the service technician via e-mail if any failure is looming. This way, breakdowns of the LED system are minimized.
