For the pedestrian zone of the city of Monheim, the artist Mischa Kuball designed a permanent light and sound installation. We developed the software for the interactive installation for Arnold AG and supported the project with interface coordination and technical and conceptual planning.
The installation reacts interactively to the movements of people passing by. The closer a person gets, the brighter and more dynamic the light becomes, while a sound installation audible only when standing inside the cube starts to play.

A street comes to life
Measuring 5 x 5 x 5 meters, the cube transforms the pedestrian zone in Monheim’s city center into a unique place. In 2022 artist Mischa Kuball conceived the monheim_cube as a sculpture, geometric form, gateway and stage. Above all, it serves as an interface between architecture and the people, with the cube reacting to those passing by with light and sound.
As soon as a person approaches the cube, they are detected by two integrated optical sensors which track their position. The installation automatically switches from an idle loop to an active mode. The software running in the background calculates the appropriate LED output from the received camera data, creating a glow around the person.
Depending on the time of day and year, the light color and intensity adjust, allowing the cube to blend seamlessly into its surroundings.
The cubes tell the story of the Neue Mitte and collect the narratives associated with it. They serve as a marker in the urban space, but also as an invitation to people to feel addressed not only as consumers, but also as active players who make this place their own.
When it is dark and the stores close, it shines most intensely.
